Pele’s Paradise Yurt is a round structure that has a double bed, closet, bean bag chair, and a skylight that lets you literally sleep under the stars. The two VW Camper Buses were rescued from the landfill and converted into cozy rentals with storage, closets, and plenty of personality. Both Daisy the Daydream Bus and Garth the Gecko Bus have full sized beds in pop-top canopies and full-sized pull-out beds below.
The rentals share a bathroom (“The most beautiful compost toilet in the world!” they claim), a stone-built outdoor shower, a communal kitchen, and communal area with solar-powered lights for after-hours revelry. There isn’t any powered hot-water yet, so guests are encouraged to shower before lunch when the sun has had a chance to naturally warm the water in the pipes. The resort does have wireless internet.
Lova Lava Land has a really helpful what-to-bring list you should make sure to check out before you pack. Key advice: Expect an experience like camping. The resort promises you’ll get so much more.
Pele’s Paradise Yurt: $55 per night for one or two. $60 per night during December 1 through January 31. $210 per week. (That’s $30 per night.) $750 per month. (That’s $25 per night.) (Ask about peak season weekly and monthly rates.)
VW Camper Buses: $35 per night for one or two. $40 per night during December 1 through January 31. $140 per week. (That’s $20 per night.) $450 per month. (That’s $15 per night.) (Ask about peak season weekly and monthly rates.)
Group rental rates: If you want to collectively book more than one rental, let Lova Lava Land know. They’ll try to get you a lower group rate.
Anitra Pickett, who owns and manages Lova Lava Land with her husband, Trond Borg, says she loves spending time at the resort chilling in a hammock or grilling under the stars. “There’s a reason this island holds the largest concentration of telescopes and astronomers – because it has the most clear and amazing day and night sky imaginable!” she says. Lova Lava Land has a thorough page describing the area’s attractions – beaches, hikes, parks, and local markets and restaurants – but Anitra says guests should also plan down time. “The main thing not to miss is the opportunity to relax, enjoy and respect nature, and reinvent oneself,” she says. “Too many tourists fly through trying to do too much and miss the real reasons why our island is so special.”
Before you go, Anitra suggests picking up a guidebook, like one from Lonely Planet
, to get acclimated to the area. As far as music goes, she highly recommends KAPA FM, a local station you can stream online – listen to it to get in the Lova Lava Land mood! Anitra also says Jimmy Buffet
’s “Volcano”
and the Grateful Dead
’s “Sugar Magnolia”
are resort theme songs.
“The bus is named ‘Daisy the Daydream Bus’ after … ‘Sugar Magnolia’…from the line ‘…sunshine daydream…’ since she is yellow like sunshine and staying in her is like a daydream!” Anitra explains.
